Xiaomi says it sold more than 2 million smartphones in Q3 in India

Xiaomi says it has sold over 2 million smartphones in the third quarter (Q3) 2016 in India and saw a 150 plus per cent YoY growth compared to Q3 2015. Xiaomi’s India head Manu Kumar Jain tweeted about the same, and the data is based on IDC India numbers. IDC data had shown that India smartphone shipments crossed 30 million for the first time in a quarter.

According to IDC, online share of smartphones increased to 31.6 per cent due to strong performance by key online players primarily from China-based vendors. Xiaomi has a stronger online presence, which explains their growth in numbers and sales. According to IDC’s recent data, Xiaomi is now in the top five vendors in India. While Lenovo Group continues to lead online channel, it is followed by Xiaomi. “Lenovo Group accounts for almost one-fourth of total online smartphone shipments driven primarily by Lenovo’s K5 series and Motorola’s G4 series models. Also, Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 3 and newly launched Redmi 3S fuelled the online shipments to a large extent,” according to Karthik J, Senior Market Analyst, Client Devices, IDC India.

Xiaomi has seen its shipments doubled over previous quarter, and according to IDC has a 7.4 per cent market share in India, while Micromax which slipped to number three has a 7.5 per cent share. In the second quarter, Xiaomi had already become the third largest smartphone vendor across the top 30 cities in India. According to IDC, Xiaomi had 8.1 per cent share in these top thirty cities, just below Samsung and Micromax. Interestingly IDC’s India Monthly Smartphone Tracker for June 2016 showed the Redmi Note 3 is the highest-shipped smartphone for online platform in India in any given quarter. Xiaomi claims to have sold around 1.75 million units of Redmi Note 3 in just five months.

Earlier this month, Flipkart claimed it has sold one million units of Xiaomi Redmi 3S on its platform since its launch in August. But while India appears to be growing in terms of sales, Xiaomi faces tough competition in its home-market of China.

However, in a recent interview with Reuters, Xiaomi’s global vice-president Hugo Barra said a drop in sales would not affect their business model. “Basically we’re giving to you without making any money we care about the recurring revenue streams over many years,” he told Reuters in an interview. “We could sell 10 billion smartphones and we wouldn’t make a single dime in profits,” he added. Interestingly Xiaomi is also set to make an appearance at CES in January 2017 for the first time.
